I went to one of his exhibits in London years ago. If any of you get a chance to go, I highly recommend it (just be warned, it's very adult-oriented material).

Re: mapplethorpe exhibit in Havana
Tue, January 10, 2006 - 7:30 PMBig deal - So the Cuban government is trying to look oh so "tolerant" by showing this exhibition - yet they don't show all of the work -they don't show all of highly sexual stuff from this artist because they know the powers that be in Cuba would object - they just show the mild homo erotic pieces - in other words the exhibition is watered down.
"The Mapplethorpe exhibition, which does not include his roughest images, embraces the photographer's internal contradictions."
Hmmm, "roughest images" the ones that where openly shown in the United States - but why can't they be shown in Cuba? Because the Cuban government will object - because the Cuban government in the end is afraid of anything that is dangerous, challenging, subversive, questioning - as is the nature of Mapplethorpe's work.
No way in hell is prudish and philistine Fidel going to allow pictures by Mapplethorpe that show anal fisting, bondage, machine guns, erect penises, or urine drinking -

And you thought there was censorship in the US or at Tribe - think again - in Cuba where the internet and internet porn is heavily censored and denied as are pages from Amnesty International or Human Rights Watch.
And all this talk about the new gay openness in Cuba - more BS - the Cuban government is just acting very quietly because of the heat from many powerful gay groups on the Left that complained big time when the regime cracked down heavily on gay nightlife in Havana a few years back. Some big names in art and media spoke out against this - threatening further protests. The regime doesn't want to step on any gay activist toes because it's afraid of a boycott or protests that will harm a steady cash flow of dollars coming in from massive gay tourism on the island.
Besides, Castro's Cuba has the unique and fascist distinction of operating the second homosexual concentration camps in history (Nazi Germany was the first) and putting AIDS sufferers in other concentration camps to die - yet we in the West are sometimes too naive or ignorant and believe the "social justice" lies of humane Cuban treatment for AIDS when in reality it's just another form of draconian repression from a bunch of 70 something year old Gallego fascists.
For a great indicator on gay Cuban life and the repression by Castro's regime, read Reinaldo Arenas for a revelation. -

Tue, January 10, 2006 - 11:53 PMJust keep in mind that the U.S. isn't all lollipops and rainbows towards the LGBT community either and that Reinaldo while his experience is real was also over 25 years ago. Not living in Cuba I can't say what the LGBT experience is like now but it appears to have changed for the better since Reinaldo's time.

Yeah that's true. Things change. Fidel is rather labile in his decisions. He allowed the movie (very critical of communist Cuban life) to be shown in Cuban theaters. His brother Raul Castro is adodi.
I mean. Yeah Fidel is a homophobe but he is one of the brightest, most charismatic and Ashe-filled leadres in history. I believe he is now the longest dictator in power. I hate him, every Cuban I know has his name inside Ogun in an attempt to kill him off.
But I think over the years he's come to grips more with it - in turns making it easy for prostitutes (men for men included) and making it difficult for them (he cleaned up Havana the best he could when the Kind of Spain visited.) Also having Raul, his brother and named successor, turn out gay must have had it's affect.

Robert Mapplethorpes exhibitions inspired Jesse Helms to pull federal funding of the Natl Endowment of the arts.
Andre Serrano inspired Mayor Juliani to close his exhibit days after it opened at some gallery in Brooklyn.
Censorship is alive and well in america too.
Try to import sex toys through certain US states- it's mandatory jail time if the customs agent or procecutor has a 'thing' for indency trials.
If you declare youself to be a communist or anarchist or socialist upon entering the US, you will be asked A LOT of questions and possibly be tailed for a few weeks during your visit.
Castros cuba leaves a lot of things to be desired but it doesn't take too much poking around in the great Eunited Staates of 'Merica to unearth the same thing. -

Re: mapplethorpe exhibit in Havana
Mon, January 8, 2007 - 5:53 PMIs the art missing from whatever they are showing? If not, why bother showing the more grotesque and diminishing stuff from this guy? There is always something to complain about and if you look you'll always find it, this world is definitely upside down, or tied up and gagged ...
Goth Timba? Damn, sounds awful ...
