visiting cuba in feburary

how easy is it to find a family to stay with in havana. can you recommend any?

what currency is the best one to bring?

i was in havana in 2000 and there was a cop on every street corner. is this still the case? i've heard it's changed.

    Well, what do you expect? Police states, will be police states.

    No it has not changed - it has gotten worse - to make sure there is control, and to watch for any demos against the regime or any sign of individualism on the part of the Cuban people.

    i'd suggest getting a hotel innitially, then going to the malecon and hanging out and meeting some folks, put out your intention to folks that you are looking to not stay in a hotel and want to pay some money to someone with an extra room. as long as you are extroverted and know spanish you should be fine.

    american monies are devalued by 10% so bring anything else, mexican. canadian. euros. if you network you can probably find a place to stay for 'bout $10 a nite including some meals.

      I stayed with a wonderful family that charged us $25 for an a/c room in a fairly upscale area of Havana breakfast included. I will look up my notes and post their names.

      The police are around and stopped us one night and requested our ID's. No big deal.

      In the malecon area, young people drink openly and I didn't see any cops hassling them like they would do here.

    If you want to eat in, pay Elsa extra. She will make you an incredible meal.
